CINÉMA CANTINE DE CARON IS AMSTERDAM’S NEW WINTER SUNDAY RITUAL

editor MAREK BARTEK

If you’re starting to struggle with Amsterdam’s dark winter period, you are not alone. Luckily, CANTINE de Caron has come up with a plan to make this winter more bearable, even enjoyable. Over eight consecutive Sundays, the beloved Amsterdam restaurant transforms into Cinéma CANTINE de Caron: a carefully curated film series to accompany dinner in an intimate setting.

Each evening follows a simple structure: guests arrive for an à-la-carte dinner before the space slowly shifts from restaurant to cinema. Once the tables are cleared and the lights dim, the film begins. Film tickets are only available in combination with dinner, encouraging guests to settle in and treat the evening as a whole rather than rushing in for a screening.

The programme is curated by filmmakers Olivia Lonsdale and Idriss Nabil, whose selections focus on character, atmosphere, and human connection. Lonsdale opens the series with Moonlight, followed by titles such as Cold War, Close, and the Dutch drama Rietland. Nabil’s choices bring a lighter, more playful tone, including Little Miss Sunshine, Le Petit Nicolas, Turist, and the Dutch favourite Shabu.

Cinéma CANTINE de Caron begins on 18 January, with dinner served between 17:30 and 18:30 and films starting at 20:00 — an easy Sunday plan that requires very little effort, and offers just enough comfort for the remaining portion of this winter.
