G-STAR’S LATEST COLLECTION PUSHES THE LIMITS

words by PHOEBE GIBSON-DOUGALL

Denim has come a long way from its modest origins. Once solely relegated to the role of workwear, its done well to shed its singular categorisation. This is in no small part thanks to G-STAR—tastemakers and iconoclasts in the realm of denim since 1989—who today launched their bold new project, Anatomic Denim.

Conceived around the anatomy and movement of the human body, Anatomic Denim at its core is designed to enhance the body’s natural form. The project spans three pillars, a new denim collection, a global campaign by Jordan Hemingway, and an art installation in the form of a monumental Anatomic Denim Gorilla by Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren.

Cult director and photographer Jordan Hemingway’s cinematic and photographic campaign serves as the beating heart of Anatomic Denim, featuring athletes from gymnastics, pole dancing, cycling, and calisthenics, all without their usual apparatuses. What remains is the human body in motion, clad in denim specifically engineered to move with it.

The Anatomic Denim product range acts as the next evolution of G-STAR’s pioneering approach to fit and construction, complete with three new or re-imagined styles. The Contor and the Kitoh showcase architectural lines and engineered seams respectively, whilst the G-STAR Elwood is reinvented for 2025 with refined anatomical tailoring.

In the words of G-STAR’s Chief Brand Officer, Gwenda van Vliet:

Anatomic Denim is the next step in G-STAR’s denim evolution, designing not just for the body, but with it in mind. Merging our 3D legacy with art, science, and craftsmanship, we bring denim to life in a raw, expressive, unmistakably G-STAR way.”

To complete Anatomic Denim’s innovative trifecta is the art; The Denim Gorilla, a 3.5-metre sculpture created with Darwin, Sinke, & van Tongeren. Celebrated for their mastery of fine taxidermy, the artists created The Denim Gorilla entirely from denim, a fitting continuation of the project’s visionary exploration of anatomy and structure.
