The Met Gala, fashion’s biggest night out, is approaching, scheduled to take place on May 3rd, 2027, the first Monday of the month. The 2027 theme - extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday - has come as a surprise to some and as a wave of underwhelm to others. Following John Galliano’s withdrawal from the exhibition previously planned around his work, the Costume Institute will examine the connection between daily wear and familiar pieces, and how these can be reimagined through creativity and craftsmanship.

Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton, with assistance from Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, said that the exhibition expands in two directions. The first is the idea of finding beauty in the mundane, and the second is about inspecting how disposable materials can be transformed into something glamorous and worth seeing.
As simple as it sounds, this subject appears rather challenging. The public, designers and A-listers alike are used to big creative couture explosions, so it will be interesting to see what appears on the red carpet. Bolton was inspired by Jun Takahashi’s fall 2024 collection for Undercover, as well as Wim Wenders’ renowned film Perfect Days, which captures the quiet grace of being present and admiring the quotidian.
Perhaps this is an attempt to do the same through clothing, to step away from the noise and shed some light on the individual, the soul wearing it. On the other hand, if not done right, it might strip away the Met Gala’s charm and the anticipation that comes with it. Either way, we are excited to see who shows up in jeans, and who dares to mean it.
