IN CONVERSATION WITH ALIYAH MASTIN
interview by JANA LETONJA
Aliyah Mastin returns to the screen as Presley in Season 2 of Hulu’s critically acclaimed series Paradise, a show that has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked-about dramas. Following a breakout first season filled with award nominations and widespread praise, the new chapter raises the emotional stakes, and Presley’s journey expands in ways that are both powerful and unexpected. As a series regular, Aliyah has quickly become a fan favorite, bringing a rare balance of vulnerability and quiet strength to the role. With Paradise deepening its impact in its second season, this marks a defining moment not only for the series, but for Aliyah’s rising career.
Season 2 of Paradise is finally here. How did it feel stepping back into Presley’s world?
It’s truly an honor to play Presley, but getting the chance to return to the role and explore even more of her world is something I’m incredibly grateful for. What excited me most was the opportunity to grow alongside her. Presley is still navigating young adulthood, and it’s fascinating to experience that journey through her, especially within the extraordinary circumstances she’s living in.
How would you describe Presley’s evolution this season compared to Season 1?
In Season 1, Presley is forced to navigate adolescence without the presence of her mother, which shapes so much of who she is. In Season 2, the stakes are even higher. She’s balancing caring for her younger brother, experiencing love for the first time, and trying to discover her own identity after a catastrophic event that completely changed her world. There’s some angst that comes with all of that, but honestly, I think she handles it better than most people her age would.
What surprised you most about where the story takes her?
This season we really get to see how much Presley is like her father. We see just how far she’s willing to go to protect the people she loves, even if it means putting herself in danger.
Season 1 was met with critical acclaim and award nominations. Did that raise the pressure going into Season 2?
A little, yes. I had the privilege of attending some of the award shows, and it was a surreal moment realizing that the actors and creators I’ve watched for years had possibly seen our show. I don’t think I’ve fully wrapped my head around that yet.
Presley has become a fan favorite. What do you think audiences connect to most about her?
I think audiences connect with Presley’s honesty. She’s a teenager who really says what she thinks and calls things exactly how she sees them. That authenticity resonates with people, and you see her lean into that even more this season.
How do you personally prepare for scenes that require deep vulnerability?
I’m still discovering new, and healthier, ways to tap into those emotional places as an actor. One thing that really helps me is music. Before emotional scenes, I often listen to intense instrumental scores from other films or shows. It helps shift my mindset and puts me in the emotional space I need to be in.
How do you protect your own emotional well-being when portraying intense material?
Sometimes I have to intentionally step away from the work once the cameras stop rolling. I love what I do and the material on Paradise can be incredibly powerful, but it can also be consuming. I try to ground myself by spending time with friends and family, taking dance classes, or doing things that reconnect me to life outside of the show.
Being part of one of Hulu’s most talked-about series is a big milestone. How are you processing this moment?
I’m not sure you ever fully process something like this while you’re in the middle of it. But what I can say is that I feel incredibly grateful. Being part of something that resonates with people is really special.
What conversations do you hope Season 2 sparks among viewers?
We have a very vocal and passionate fan base, which I love. They’re never afraid to share what they’re thinking, so honestly I’m just excited to see the conversations that come out of this season.
How has Paradise shaped your growth as an actor?
Paradise has fed me so much creatively. Not only has my craft grown, but my confidence and self-reliance as an actor have grown as well. The material is incredibly challenging, which pushes me to come back to set braver each time. I feel very lucky to play a role that allows me to constantly keep learning.
As this new chapter unfolds, what excites you most about what’s ahead, both for Presley and for you personally?
I’m excited to see what’s next for the Collins family and for the show overall. Even though I’ve read the scripts, it still feels like a surprise when you watch the episodes come together in their final form.
Personally, I’m also excited to explore other areas of the industry, including directing, making music, and screenwriting. I love storytelling in every form, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to grow creatively.
