IN CONVERSATION WITH AMBYR MICHELLE

interview by JANA LETONJA

Rising star Ambyr Michelle is currently captivating audiences as Eva Thomas on Beyond the Gates, the breakout CBS series redefining daytime television. Before stepping into the world of Beyond the Gates, Ambyr showcased her range in #BlackAF alongside Kenya Barris and Rashida Jones on Netflix. Now, as she steps further into the spotlight, she’s not only delivering powerful performances on screen but also building a meaningful presence off-screen through her work in spirituality and wellness.

Beyond the Gates has quickly become a standout show. What drew you to the role of Eva Thomas?

What drew me to Eva Tomas was her emotional complexity. She’s layered, bold, edgy, and loves deeply, even when it costs her. I was intrigued by the fact that we meet her in the middle of her healing and self-discovery, exploring her wounds in real time.

How would you describe Eva in your own words, and what makes her so compelling to play?

I’d describe Eva as unique. She jumps off the page. She’s extremely passionate, loyal, and unafraid to fight for what she believes is right. What makes her so compelling to play is her willingness to put herself on the line for those she loves. I also love that her face reveals exactly what she’s feeling, even when she says nothing.

The show explores power, family, and identity. How do you personally connect to those themes?

I’m learning that power comes from within. Everyone holds a piece of it, and true wisdom is recognizing that while understanding there are levels to it. Family is essential in my life, they’re my biggest cheerleaders and keep me grounded in a world that can feel fleeting. As for identity, I’m still exploring it, but I know it’s deeply rooted in my faith.

What has it been like being part of such a culturally impactful and groundbreaking series?

The experience has been surreal, historic, and truly monumental. Centering a wealthy Black family is something we rarely see, and witnessing how audiences feel inspired and seen in such a fresh, elevated way is incredibly exciting.

How do you prepare emotionally for some of Eva’s more intense moments?

I pray and ask the Lord to use me as a vessel to reach people who need to know it’s okay to explore their emotions. I step into Eva’s shoes, empathize with her, and draw from my own experiences, giving myself permission to be fully and emotionally honest.

Looking back at your time on #BlackAF, how did that experience shape you as an actor?

Working on #BlackAF taught me the importance of always being ready. Opportunity can knock at any moment, and preparation is everything.

What kind of roles or stories are you hoping to explore next?

I want to explore the complexities of romantic love, the kind that changes you from the inside out. I’m also drawn to roles that push me physically and mentally, like an action-packed spy, where I’d be tested for endurance, skill, and mental toughness.

How does fashion or styling help you express different sides of yourself?

I love for my clothes to reflect my mood—bold, creative, and colorful. My style is vivid, unique, and expressive because that’s how I feel inside. I truly believe that when you look good, you feel good.

You’re deeply connected to mindfulness and spirituality. How does that influence your work?

Mindfulness and spirituality are everything in my work. They allow me to dive deep into myself, make rare and intentional choices, and bring authenticity to my artistry. Knowing I’m connected to the creator fuels my passion and depth in every performance.

What inspired you to write ‘Built in the Chaos’?

I wrote ‘Built in the Chaos’ to bridge the gap between spirituality and the entertainment industry, encouraging people to invite God into their creative journey. I wanted to share the honest trials of being a creative while inspiring others to keep going and push past the noise and chaos around them.

Who is this book really for, and what do you hope readers feel after finishing it?

This book is for anyone with a vision and the courage to pursue it. I hope readers finish it feeling unstoppable, resilient, and inspired to move forward, knowing they’re not alone and that the challenges of chasing their dreams are worth it.

How do you personally stay grounded while navigating rapid growth and visibility?

I stay grounded through prayer, stillness, and reading my Bible, remembering that love, joy, and kindness are what truly matter. I also reflect on why I started—to help viewers heal, introspect, and discover who they are at their core.
