IN CONVERSATION WITH ANA SOPHIA HEGER

interview by JANA LETONJA

Ana Sophia Heger IS starring in her first leading role in Lionsgate film ‘She Rides Shotgun’, which released on 1st August. She got her start as a series regular on CBS’s ‘Life in Pieces’ at the age of just 3. She later also starred in Netflix’s thriller ‘Things Heard & Seen’.

We can currently watch you in your first leading role in ‘She Rides Shotgun’. Polly is such a layered, emotionally intense character. How did you prepare for a role that demanded so much depth at such a young age.

I read the script lots of times, analyzing each scene to learn as much about my character as possible. What does my character want in each scene, how do the other characters interact with mine. I wrote a full backstory about the role, and whatever the script might not answer directly, I will use my imagination instead. My Dad helps me with all that.

What was it like working opposite Taron Egerton? Did you learn anything from watching or acting alongside him?

I learned a lot about focus. Taron is very professional, always comes prepared, and I admire his dedication to the craft. We had long hours every day, but many times he had to stay even longer, shooting late into the night. He never complained, always performing on the highest level. He taught me a lot about discipline as well.

This is your first major dramatic lead. How did that responsibility feel going into production?

The intensive preparation process helped me a lot. I worked very hard leading up to filming, which gave me the necessary confidence. Preparation is a key factor. I felt ready to go.

You started acting at just 3 years old on ‘Life in Pieces’. What do you remember from your first time on set?

It was a long time ago. I honestly don't remember details other than I always loved going to set.

How has your experience as a child actor shaped the way you approach roles now?

Not easy to answer that one, though my parents tell me that I have always been quite a serious actor. I just don't remember those days clearly. Today, I'd say I am certainly more aware of the craft of acting and pay more attention to the details.

What’s something about working on a Netflix thriller like ‘Things Heard & Seen’ that stuck with you the most?

I remember we filmed that in New York, and I really enjoy filming on location. I love exploring new places and environments. We were in New Mexico for ‘She Rides Shotgun’.

You speak German and Spanish fluently. Has your multicultural background helped you as an actress?

I have yet to film an international production, but I would really appreciate the opportunity to use these other languages.

When you’re not on set, you’re into tennis, tumbling, and spending time with your brother. How do you balance your career and just being a kid?

That balance is important. I am quite selective with my acting roles, and that allows me the time I need with friends and family.

What’s something surprising or silly fans might not know about you?

I can literally roll my tongue into what most people say looks like the shape of a tortilla chip.

Now that you’ve played such a powerful lead, what kinds of roles are you excited to take on next?

I will look for material that challenges me. I love roles that are very different from myself.
