IN CONVERSATION WITH BECKY G
interview by JANA LETONJA
GUESS is bringing back one of its most iconic denim silhouettes: the low-rise B Jean. Fronting the new campaign is global superstar Becky G, whose West Coast roots, personal style and love of denim bring a fresh energy to the Y2K-inspired look. We caught up with Becky to talk about the return of low-rise denim, fashion as a form of self-expression, her Chicana heritage, and the confidence that comes with finding the perfect pair of jeans.

What was your first reaction when GUESS approached you to be the face of the B Jean campaign?
GUESS is such an iconic brand, so being invited to become part of that legacy was really special and exciting. I've always admired how the brand celebrates strong, confident women, and having the opportunity to bring my own personality and perspective to this campaign made the experience even more meaningful.
Do you remember your first pair of GUESS jeans, or an iconic GUESS look from the early 2000s that has always stayed with you?
My first pair were hand-me downs from a cousin of mine. I loved them so much.
Low-rise denim is officially making a comeback. How do you feel about seeing that Y2K silhouette return?
I love seeing low-rise denim make its way back into fashion today. It's such a major part of early 2000s fashion, and there's something exciting about seeing it through a modern lens. What I especially appreciate about the B Jean is how the fit feels both nostalgic and modern. It's a great example of how a classic style can evolve while maintaining what made it iconic in the first place.
What makes a pair of jeans the perfect jeans for you?
For me, the perfect pair of jeans comes down to fit, comfort, and versatility. I want something that complements my body and feels just as good as it looks. I've always gravitated toward pieces that I can wear in different ways, whether I'm going for a more casual look or dressing up.
You’ve said there’s something about putting on a great pair of jeans that instantly makes you feel good. What is it about denim that gives you that feeling?
There’s a certain feeling that comes with denim that I've always loved which is being one of those wardrobe staples that never feels forced. Finding a pair that fits you exactly how you want it to, feels so empowering.
How would you style the B Jean for a typical day in your life, and how would you dress it up for a night out?
For an everyday look, I'd keep it simple with a fitted tank or classic tee, sneakers, and a few accessories. For a night out, I'd switch to a pair of heels, a statement top, and some bold jewelry. The beauty of the B Jean is that you can completely transform the look depending on how you style it.
The campaign is all about being yourself and having fun with your personal style. When do you feel most confident in what you’re wearing?
My style can change depending on the day, whether I'm going on tour or recording in the studio. I've learned that confidence doesn't necessarily come from wearing the most elaborate outfit, but from feeling comfortable and completely yourself in whatever you choose.
GUESS describes you as embodying authenticity, confidence and attitude. What does confidence mean to you today compared with when you first entered the industry?
When I was younger, I think confidence was often about proving myself and finding my place in an industry where I was still figuring out who I wanted to be. Today, it's much more about trusting myself, embracing my growth, and being comfortable with the woman I've become. I've learned that confidence isn't about having everything figured out, but about giving yourself the freedom to continue evolving.
Fashion can come with so many rules about what different body types “should” and “shouldn’t” wear. What is your relationship with those kinds of rules?
I've never believed that personal style should be defined by a set of rules, especially since everyone has a different relationship with their body and with fashion, and I think that's what makes personal style so interesting. I've learned to focus on what makes me feel good rather than what I'm supposedly meant to wear because it's a way to express ourselves.
Low-rise jeans can feel a little intimidating for some people. What would you say to someone who loves the look but isn’t sure they can pull it off?
I would say don't be afraid to experiment and find what works for you. I have a shorter torso, so low-rise jeans don't always fit me the way you might expect. But, the fit of the GUESS B Jean really works for my body. I feel like it’s important to remember that trends aren't meant to look the same on everyone, but about finding your own way to wear something.
The early 2000s are being rediscovered by a generation that didn’t necessarily experience them the first time around. Why do you think Y2K style resonates so strongly right now?
I think there's a certain playfulness and boldness to early 2000s fashion that people are naturally drawn to. It was a time when fashion felt very expressive, especially through music and pop culture. What's interesting now is seeing how younger generations are taking those influences and finding inspiration to make it their own.
If you could steal the wardrobe of one Y2K fashion icon for a day, whose would it be?
Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez in the early 2000s. The glam and outfits were always so fun.
What song, yours or someone else’s, would be the perfect soundtrack for putting on the B Jean and heading out?
5’5 by Becky G.
