IN CONVERSATION WITH BELLA PODARAS
interview by JANA LETONJA
American actress Bella Podaras is entering an exciting new phase of her career with a role in the upcoming season of Euphoria, the Emmy-winning cultural phenomenon known for its raw and unfiltered portrayal of modern youth. She first gained global attention as Brooke Bishop in The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia, where her comedic timing and natural screen presence connected with audiences worldwide. Now stepping into the intense and emotionally complex world of Euphoria, Bella continues to establish herself as part of a rising generation of young performers unafraid to take creative risks and explore deeper storytelling.

What initially attracted you to the opportunity to be a part of Euphoria?
When I first auditioned for Euphoria, I knew the chances of even being considered for the role were slim. So when I found out a week or so later that they were offering me the part, I was extremely surprised and completely honoured. I said yes immediately, not really even knowing what the job entailed, but only knowing how great the prior seasons had been.
The show is known for its emotional intensity and bold storytelling. What was it like stepping into this world?
It was amazing. It definitely felt more like a film set than a TV set. Stepping into this world is exactly what you think it would be: thrilling, colourful, and daunting.

What can you tell us about your character and her role within the new season?
I am not able to say much about my role before the episodes air, but my character is definitely a head turner and was beyond fun for me to be.
Did working on Euphoria challenge you in ways that felt different from your previous projects?
I was challenged in ways on this show that I hadn't been before. Obviously, coming onto a show that has been beloved for so long and has such a loyal fanbase would be scary for anyone. But when I would actually go into work, that was the last thing I was thinking about. Mostly, I was just trying to be present and enjoy my time working with this insane crew of people.

You started studying Broadway and theatre at a very young age. Do you remember what first made you fall in love with performing?
I think I always remember loving to express different parts of myself that maybe don't get to come out often or otherwise. I feel I can understand people easily, and I enjoy outwardly creating the version of them I see in my mind.
How did your early experience on stage influence the way you approach acting on screen?
Stage and screen acting are typically pretty different, but I think the process of both is the same for me. How I prepare mentally, the music I listen to, the way my makeup looks, it's all the same sort of process.

Moving to Los Angeles at 12 to pursue acting professionally is a big step. What do you remember most about that time?
In the beginning, I felt really excited. Everything was challenging but new, so any of my daily struggles didn't seem so bad. In my teen years, I felt a lot more lost. Luckily, now as an adult, I've learned to just embrace this reality of not knowing what's next or around the corner in life. But as a child, this truth felt really destabilising.
When preparing for a new role, what part of the process do you enjoy the most?
As you read the script, you learn more and more about your character and how they choose to go through life. Sometimes you need to fill in blanks for yourself, but I love the feeling and moment when you finally start really understanding who this character is. Once you get past that first aha moment and you're on set in full makeup and wardrobe, it's a satisfying feeling because then you are no longer you.
Are there particular genres or types of characters you’re especially excited to explore in the future?
I'm from the south, so naturally I have big Western dreams.

As someone who started acting at such a young age, how do you stay grounded while growing up in the industry?
I don't think there is a recipe for everyone to follow. I have a good idea of who I don't want to be, so that leaves a lot of space to create who I am. I think grounding comes from empathy and perception. I know what I like and who I like to spend my time with. I also know what I need to do for myself to regroup if I am not feeling my best.
How do you balance the intensity of work with time for yourself and your personal life?
When I'm in the zone with work, it can be hard to connect back to reality, but honestly, I love my life and being with my friends and boyfriend, so that's always going to be a big priority for me. I'm always going to try to get everyone together to have fun, even during work weeks. I love to do things for my life, not just my career.
