IN CONVERSATION WITH EVE HARLOW
interview by JANA LETONJA
Eve Harlow returns to the small screen this fall in ‘Watson’ season two, CBS’s hit procedural and modern reimagining of the world of Sherlock Holmes, which premiered on 13th October. Born in the Soviet Union and raised in Canada, Eve has carved out an eclectic career marked by fearless choices and emotional honesty. Known for her roles in ‘The 100’, 'Star Trek: Discovery', and ‘The Night Agent’, she continues to prove her versatility with every project. With ‘Watson’ cementing her as one of TV’s most compelling presences, Eve is stepping into a powerful new chapter, one that blends intellect, strength, and enigmatic charm.
‘Watson’ was one of CBS’s biggest new dramas last year. How does it feel stepping back into Dr. Ingrid Derian’s world for season two?
Exciting. She’s one of the most fascinating characters I’ve gotten to play, so I’m excited to have another season to explore her journey.
Ingrid’s firing at the end of last season left fans shocked. Without giving too much away, what can we expect from her return this year?
A willingness to play better with others.
What do you love most about playing Ingrid, and what do you find most challenging about her?
Is it weird to say that I love everything, including the medical jargon? Ingrid is the polar opposite of who I am, so finding a way into how she sees the world has been really rewarding as an actor. And even though I said I love it, the medical jargon is by far the most challenging.
The show balances medical mystery and emotional storytelling beautifully. What do you think sets ‘Watson’ apart from other procedurals?
We have an incredible team of writers, and they have constructed a unique show that gives audiences a taste of everything. It’s as comedic as it is dramatic. Character-driven yet incredibly intricate. It’s a beautifully layered show that is constantly evolving.
As the show has grown in popularity, have you noticed the fandom becoming more vocal or passionate about your character?
People have been saying very nice things, and it is very much appreciated. Who knew a sociopath could get so much love.
You’ve played such a wide range of characters throughout your career, from ‘The 100’ to ‘The Night Agent’ to ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to ‘Watson’. How do you approach choosing your roles?
I gravitate towards characters whose moral compass may seem questionable, characters that are perhaps easy to judge negatively. I like to explore them in a really open-minded way, eradicate the judgement, and find their core humanity.
You’ve had a long career spanning drama, sci-fi, and thriller genres. Is there a type of role or story you’re still eager to explore?
Top of the list is smart, cool action, ‘John Wick’, where I get to kick a lot of butt. To totally contrast that, I’ve also never done a smaller independent film, and would love to work with someone like Sean Baker.
Acting often requires tapping into vulnerability and complexity. How do you decompress after emotionally demanding scenes?
Honestly, nothing beats a good night of sleep.
Outside of acting, what are the creative outlets or passions that keep you grounded?
I’m an avid reader and music lover. On average, I read a book per week, and go to see live music as often as I can. Also, I like pottery, muay thai, and dabble a bit with writing.
Looking ahead, what’s next for you? Are there projects or dream collaborations you’re excited about beyond ‘Watson’?
One of the best things about this line of work is you never know what’s around the corner. I never could’ve predicted any of the jobs I’ve had thus far, and have been so lucky to have so many great parts come my way. So, what I’m excited about? Everything that I can’t predict that lies ahead.
