IN CONVERSATION WITH GEORGIE FARMER

interview by MARIE-PAULINE CESARI

Georgie Farmer is quickly becoming one of the standout faces of a new generation of British talent. Best known for his role as Ajax Petropolus in Netflix’s global phenomenon ‘Wednesday’, Georgie became a fan favorite in the show’s first season, and with Season 2 dropping in two parts this August and September, his role is set to become even more pivotal.

How did it feel stepping back into Ajax for season two of ‘Wednesday’? Anything different this time?

It was so great to come back. Filming season one, I met the most incredible people that became some of my closest friends and so I was so ready to get back to work and see them all again. This year for Ajax, it’s really about him feeling more comfortable and confident in himself. Gorgans are told to not look anyone in the eye and keep to themselves, so it was an interesting dynamic of being an outcast among outcasts. Ajax also has a lot of feelings to overcome this season which was exciting to step into.

What’s something about filming ‘Wednesday’ people wouldn’t expect?

It really does feel like you’re at Nevermore. I think we all have such a unique and special dynamic between us all that going to work every day really feels like going to get to hang out in this cool world that the team have created. We all have to pinch ourselves that this is our job. We all feel so lucky to be there

Do you watch your own performances when they come out?

I can’t. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a scene I have done and not felt like there were so many things I should have done different, so it’s best for me not to watch because I’ll just keep myself up at night.

How do you personally relate to Ajax, if at all?

I really relate to him. I’ve always been so socially awkward, and I remember really struggling fitting in when I was growing up. I also feel like we’ve all been through heartbreak at some point and that felt close to home this season when playing him.

What’s been your favorite moment on set so far, on or off camera?

There’s been so many. There was one night in Dublin where all of us went to a karaoke place and after, we all went back to Joy’s apartment to play games and just hang out. Me, Owen and Noah would also play music and jam together most nights when we had time off. It was such a special time. We would just play music until 2 am and speak until sunrise. I can’t put into words just how much those moments meant to me. I love those people so much and am so grateful to do this with them

What kind of roles are you itching to take on next?

Honestly, I’m really itching to explore as much as possible. I’m so in awe of actors that have such wide-ranging filmography. I love the work. I really want to just work as hard as I can on my craft, to really focus on the roles that make you say to yourself “Can I do this?” I just really want to push myself and explore different worlds, different people and get to work with unique collaborators.

Tell us about ‘Lifehack’, what drew you to it?

‘Lifehack’ is about 4 internet hackers that embark on an online heist that has real life consequences. Ronan and Hope wrote such an amazing script. I remember reading it and thinking I had never seen anything like this before, and it just kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the dynamic they wrote between the four characters. It felt so authentic. I remember meeting Ronan for the first time and honestly just trying to convince him to let me have the role.

You and Yasmin Finney have great chemistry, what was that dynamic like on set?

Working with Yasmin was such a great experience, and I think she’s amazing in this film. It was an intense filming process and so you really do end up leaning on those you work with. The whole cast really bought their A game too. Jessica is just so good and elevates every scene that she’s in. James brought so much realism to this story, and Roman, who I absolutely love in life and this movie, is such a highlight. I can’t wait for people to see what they do in this film.

What keeps you grounded when things get hectic?

I’m very lucky to have such a supportive family and friends that I’ve known for so long. It’s so important to have a life outside of work that’s real. I think the balance is the most important thing. So much about what we get to do is a dream come true. You have to take it and make sure you cherish these surreal moments because they truly are once in a lifetime. I’m so thankful and grateful for them and I realise just how lucky I am. And then also being able to switch off from it and go and meet your friends in a pub or something is so important.

What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in the past year, either in work or life?

I’ve always had so much anxiety in my life. Someone really special to me is always telling me to try and not stress about things you can’t control, and I’ve really tried to stick to that. It’s very hard to do, but I’m trying.
