IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL BRADWAY

interview by JANA LETONJA

Michael Bradway is poised for a major breakout with Amazon's highly anticipated adaptation of Every Year After, which premiered on June 10th and is based on the New York Times bestselling novel, Every Summer After, by Carley Fortune. Audiences may already know Michael from Chicago Fire, but this is his true leading man moment. A former model turned actor, he is quickly emerging as one of Hollywood's most promising young talents.

What first attracted you to the role of Charlie in Every Year After

I was attracted for two reasons. First, I was really excited to play a character who has such a strong relationship with his brother. They’re yin and yang in a way, especially with how they deal with their emotions. While they share a lot of similarities, they are so different. Plus, playing that teasing/playful banter with Matt was a lot of fun.

And second, I was intrigued to play a character that is so different from myself. I learned a lot from Charlie. He has so much confidence and is the life of the party. He also makes a mean chocolate cake.

Had you read Carley Fortune's novels before joining the project?

I hadn’t. When I auditioned for the show, it had an alias title, Meet Cute. When I booked the role, I immediately grabbed both Every Summer After and One Golden Summer. I was instantly hooked.

Charlie has become a fan-favourite character among readers. Did that add any pressure when bringing him to life?

It definitely added a little bit of pressure, but I was more excited than anything else. Charlie is such a fun character to play as an actor. For me, it’s a lot more nerve-racking to audition than it is when I actually book the job. Once I booked Charlie, it gave me so much confidence and belief in myself to be this person.

What can fans of the novel expect from the series adaptation?

They can expect to see some of their favourite book characters on screen right in front of them. I love reading, so I’m always so excited when one of my favourite books is being adapted to a TV show.

Without giving spoilers away, what makes Charlie such an important part of the story?

Charlie adds levity and a flirty element to Every Year After. He’s a polarising character. From what I’ve read, people either love him or hate him.

You've worked on projects ranging from Chicago Fire to feature films. How did this role differ from your previous work?

This role differs in so many ways. It’s my first time being a series regular and the first time I was part of a brand new TV show. It’s fun to be a part of something from the ground floor.

How have you been feeling now that the show is out in the world?

It’s both surreal and exciting. When filming this project, it felt private, as though the show was only for us, the people making it. And then, of course, it gets released to the world, and now it becomes everyone’s to watch and share.

Looking back at your transition from modelling to acting, what has been the most rewarding part of that journey?

They go hand in hand. Modelling got me more comfortable with auditioning and putting myself out there. Also, as a model, I was anonymous. Now my actual name is attached to these articles and photoshoots. It’s really special.

What lessons have you learned from working alongside experienced actors throughout your career?

I’m really fortunate to have worked with some amazing actors from each project I’ve worked on, Taylor Kinney, Miranda Ray Mayo, Chase Stokes, Matt Cornett. And one thing they all have in common is how dedicated to their craft they are. All consummate professionals and, of course, super talented.

Are there any dream roles or genres you'd love to explore next?

One of my dream roles would be playing Richard Papen in The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Also, I’m a huge David Fincher fan, so working on one of his films would be a dream.

What keeps you busy and creatively excited outside of acting?

I’ve picked up the drums again. It’s both entertaining and therapeutic. I’m currently learning the song Conceited by Lola Young. Also, my fiancée and I are wedding planning. I’m so excited to get married to my sweetheart.
