IN CONVERSATION WITH NELL FISHER

interview by JANA LETONJA

At just 13 years old, British-Kiwi breakout star Nell Fisher steps into the final part of the 5th season of ‘Stranger Things’. With the celebrated Duffer Brothers bringing the story full circle in a season bigger, darker, and more emotional than ever, Nell emerges as the unexpected force anchoring its biggest mysteries and most unforgettable moments. Already praised for her acclaimed performances in ‘Evil Dead Rise’ and ‘Bookworm’ opposite Elijah Wood, she has built a reputation for depth far beyond her years, making her one of the most compelling rising talents of her generation.

When you found out Holly Wheeler would become a central figure in the final season of ‘Stranger Things’, what went through your mind?

I was just so excited. It was April 2023, I was in New Zealand filming ‘Bookworm’ with Elijah Wood, and had a Zoom call with the Duffer brothers and they offered me the job. I was also a bit daunted because it’s such a big deal, but I’d met Sadie during the audition process, and got on really well with her, so that gave me confidence. And of course, the Duffers were amazing and so welcoming.

‘Stranger Things’ is one of the biggest shows in the world. What was it like stepping into such a massive global phenomenon at such a pivotal moment?

It was really scary at first. I remember the table read for Season Five, in Atlanta late in 2023. I’d hardly met any of the cast, and everyone is sat round this massive black table reading the script for the very first time. And I’d somehow heard that people could get sacked at table reads, so I was nervous. But everyone was so welcoming, which put me at ease and the atmosphere on set was always amazing.

Without revealing plot twists, how would you describe the tone or feel of Season 5 for fans waiting anxiously?

Well, it’s dark, and really quite scary. And a lot happens, including with Holly. But it also retains that amazing spirit of adventure with an emphasis on love, between friends and family, and on looking after each other.

The Duffer Brothers have hinted that this season answers questions going all the way back to Season 1. How did it feel to help bring the story full circle?

It felt like quite a responsibility. Because all the original kids are grown now, Holly comes into the centre of the piece much more. And it was such a challenge and a privilege to bring Holly from this little girl who’s very much on the margins, seeing a bit of what’s going on but not really understanding it, to someone who finds out everything and is at the centre of the action.

You’ve already worked in horror, action, family adventure, and now massive sci-fi fantasy. Do you approach each genre differently?

Not really. For me, it’s all about doing my best work, connecting with my character, and bringing her to life, whoever she is and whatever is happening. And it’s about the teamwork with cast and crew and having fun on the way. Because even if a film is dark, like ‘Evil Dead Rise’, the process of filming it isn’t. It’s fun with all the blood and special effects and things.

You’ve lived between South Africa, New Zealand, and now London. How has moving around shaped who you are?

It’s made me a ‘big world’ person, given me a broad perspective on things like knowing how many different ways there are to live a life. And I always remember how lucky I am with the life that I’ve got.

What do you do to stay grounded while juggling school, acting, and international travel?

Between homework, chores at home, my siblings, and my friends, it’s really not hard. I love the work, but I also love just being a normal kid at home and school. And I’m really lucky to have an amazing supportive family helping me on this slightly crazy journey.

Are there types of stories or genres you’d love to explore next?

I’m interested in all sorts of things. I’d love to do a really character-based film, a drama perhaps, but would also love to do a big set piece adventure. I’m pretty open, to be honest.

If you could dream-cast your next co-star, anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

I would like to be Meryl Streep’s granddaughter. I don’t know, maybe my parents die tragically, the way lots of stories start, and she’s the estranged grandmother who has to step in. I think she’s completely amazing.

What’s one thing about you that fans might be surprised to learn?

I’m a bit of a geek. I love my schoolwork, work really hard, and am studying Latin and Ancient Greek.
