IN CONVERSATION WITH NICOLE WILLIAMS-ENGLISH

interview by JANA LETONJA

Nicole Williams-English is a globally recognized model, entrepreneur, and content creator whose influence spans fashion, entertainment, and advocacy. Nicole first captured attention on the hit E! series ‘WAGS’ and has since expanded her television presence while continuing to dominate in the modeling world. As the founder of the successful swimwear brand Nia Lynn, Nicole has proven herself a force in both design and business. Off the runway, she channels her voice toward meaningful causes, serving as the U.S. Celebrity Ambassador for World Animal Protection and maintaining a long-standing partnership with Beyond Meat.

You’ve had such a dynamic career, from reality TV to high-fashion modeling. Looking back, what moment felt like a turning point for you personally or professionally?

The turning point for me was landing Sports Illustrated. It was always one of the biggest goals on my vision board. I got the call when I was 39 and pregnant, going through one of the biggest transitions of my life - becoming a mom. To have that dream realized at that exact moment felt like the universe saying “You’re just getting started.” It was life-changing and reminded me that there’s no expiration date on your dreams.

You gained a major platform through ‘WAGS’. How did your time on the show influence your career and public persona, and what did you learn from that experience?

‘WAGS’ was such a wild ride. It gave me visibility on a scale I hadn’t experienced before, and I’ll always be grateful for the platform it gave me. It also taught me the importance of using that platform for a greater good. I gained a large following from the show, and I saw it as an opportunity to give back and be a positive influence on the people who were watching and connecting with me. That experience helped shape the way I use my voice today, with purpose and intention.

You’ve modeled all over the world and appeared in the Sports Illustrated show. How has your approach to modeling evolved as your brand and voice have grown?

In the beginning, I was just focused on landing the job and keeping up with the other models. Now, I’m focused on what that job means. I’m more intentional about who I work with, what values they represent, and how I align with the brand. I’m also at a point in my life where I am comfortable in my own skin, I know who I am, and I am not afraid of showing that.

Nia Lynn has become a standout swimwear brand. What inspired you to launch your own line, and what sets it apart from others in the space?

I created Nia Lynn because I wanted women to feel both strong and feminine in their swimwear. I was tired of pieces that either didn’t flatter a woman’s body or lacked personality. Nia Lynn is about high-quality fits, and bold designs. Each piece reflects a part of my own journey and style.

How do you balance creativity and business when it comes to running your own fashion brand?

It’s a constant dance. I’m naturally creative, so I could sketch and mood-board for days, but I’ve had to learn the backend of running a business well. Production timelines, logistics, budgeting, all of it. I’ve built a great team that helps bridge both worlds, and I stay closely involved in all creative direction while still learning every day. I’m very hands on.

You’ve transitioned from being known primarily as a model to building a lifestyle and media presence. Was that a conscious shift?

Definitely. I’ve always known that modeling was just the first chapter. I wanted to expand into TV, motherhood, animal advocacy, and the skin care space. I didn’t want to be boxed in by just one identity. So, I’ve been very intentional about stepping into all the other parts of who I am and sharing that with the world.

How do you decide which parts of your life to share with the public, especially across social media?

I share what feels authentic and aligned in the moment. I try to lead with honesty, but I also protect certain parts of my life, especially my daughter. Social media is powerful, but it’s not my whole life. I want people to feel connected to me, not perform for them.

You’re a passionate advocate for animal welfare and sustainable living. What sparked your journey into plant-based living and animal rights?

It started in childhood. I grew up in a home that took in every stray animal imaginable. Dogs, cats, birds, turtles, frogs you name it. That early connection never left me. As I got older and learned more about the food industry and the fashion industry’s impact on animals and the planet, I started making changes. It wasn’t overnight, but every step brought me closer to living with more compassion and alignment.

As the US Celebrity Ambassador for World Animal Protection, what initiatives are you most excited about or proud to support?

I’m especially proud to support their work ending the global wildlife trade and fighting for animals in entertainment. So many animals suffer behind the scenes in ways most people never see. I love using my platform to educate and advocate, whether that’s speaking out against roadside zoos or pushing for more ethical tourism practices. It’s about giving animals a voice they wouldn’t otherwise have. I just did a campaign against animals in captivity recently.

How do you incorporate sustainability and compassion into your brand and everyday life, especially as someone in the fashion industry?

We make a conscious effort to use ethically sourced fabrics, minimize waste, and support responsible manufacturing. Personally, I reuse, recycle, and try to make thoughtful choices from what I eat to how I shop. I’m a thrift shopper. I love flea markets and vintage clothing. I’m not perfect, but I believe in progress, not perfection. The key is being aware and taking responsibility for the impact you make.

What keeps you grounded amidst such a multifaceted career?

My daughter keeps me grounded for sure. So does my family and my close circle of friends who knew me before any of the lights and cameras. I also try to take time for self-care when I can and spend time doing things that make me happy or keep me grounded. I love going to the movies, watching old movies from my childhood, and going to Disneyland and seeing the world from India’s eyes.

Are there any upcoming TV or film projects you’re excited about or hoping to pursue next?

Yes. I’m in the early stages of a few projects that I can’t speak upon yet, but I’m excited to get more into hosting and maybe do some reality TV again. There are exciting conversations happening, and I’m staying open to what feels aligned and impactful.
