IN CONVERSATION WITH BAPTISTE GIABICONI

interview by MARIE-PAULINE CESARI

Numéro Netherlands is thrilled to present BAPTISTE GIABICONI, gracing the cover of our 12th isuee Aurora, captured by KOSMAS PAVLOS in Paris. From the runway to the recording studio, BAPTISTE GIABICONI has built a career that transcends fashion. Discovered at a young age, he quickly became KARL LAGERFELD’s muse and walked for the likes of CHANEL, FENDI and ARMANI, while gracing the pages of the world’s greatest magazines, including our own. Beyond modelling, he has embraced his passion for music and proven his versatility as an artist. As we explore Aurora, our theme for this issue, Baptiste reflects on his ever-evolving journey and the light that continues to guide him forward.

You were discovered at a young age — can you recall the moment or experience that first sparked your passion for modelling?

Yes, I was lucky to be discovered quite young. By the time I was 17, I already knew without a doubt that I wanted to be a top model. I just knew it! So, I moved to Paris on my own to chase that dream. I started landing some great jobs and was happy, but the real dream began when Karl discovered me.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learnt from him?

I don’t think there are enough pages in the magazine to list even half of what I learned from Karl (laughs)! I soaked up everything like a sponge; every moment with him was unforgettable. But one piece of advice has stayed with me: “Be loyal and humble, both professionally and personally.”

You’ve worked with some of the biggest fashion houses, including Chanel. Is there a particular campaign or runway moment that stands out as a defining experience for you?

Karl’s Chanel shows were legendary — every single one was an extraordinary experience. But I also have a very special memory of walking for OLIVIER ROUSTEING at BALMAIN. It was an incredibly powerful moment on a human level as well. Of course, I love the brands I work with; but to me, the people behind them matter just as much. I’ve always made it a priority to work with kind and humble individuals.

Shifting from modelling into music is not that common, and it was certainly a bold move! What inspired you to explore that creative path?

As Karl used to say, “No risk, no fun!” Music has been a passion of mine since childhood — I love singing and sharing emotions with people. When I told Karl about my desire to pursue music, he fully supported me. In fact, he even designed the cover for one of my singles and oversaw the artistic direction of one of my music videos. Being around Karl, you had no choice but to dare to be creative.

How do you stay authentic in an industry that constantly evolves?

Faith and family. Keeping my feet on the ground, questioning every decision before making it and never rushing into things blindly.

Talking about family, what does Corsica represent for you, and how has it shaped your identity?

Everything. I am Corsican, and I’m proud of it. My values, my sense of pride — it all comes from my island. To me, it’s the most beautiful place in the world, and I encourage everyone to visit. You won’t believe your eyes — it’s paradise!

Is there a particular place there that holds special meaning for you?

My father’s house. I spent my childhood summers there with my parents, and I went back just recently to help my dad with some renovations. That house holds all my childhood memories.

You’ve been in the public eye for years. What’s something people might not know about you that you wish they did?

I’m quite open about everything! But if there’s one thing people might not realise, it’s that I’m actually quite anxious by nature. It’s not the most fun fact, but it’s the truth. I’m happy but also a bit of a worrier. Oh, and I’m a total neat freak (laughs)! I’ll stop there.

Looking ahead, what are your biggest dreams, whether in fashion, music or beyond?

Cinema, without hesitation. That’s my next professional goal. And on a personal level, paying tribute to Karl in a meaningful way is something very important to me, and I’m actively working on it.

The theme of our current issue is Aurora, which represents new beginnings, transformation and light. What does this theme inspire in you?

It’s my mantra! I’m always striving to move forward and walk towards the light.
