IN CONVERSATION WITH MARRØN

words THORE DAMWERTH

A creator, a force, a rhythm, a friend — MARRØN emerged as all these and more within the dynamic scene of Amsterdam’s electronic music underground. An artist whose sound is as minimal as it is monumental, he weaves rhythms that not only move bodies but stir something deeper, something ancestral, with a sense of discipline and introspection. For Marrøn, born JESSEY VOORN, the act of DJing is less about spectacle and more about presence — the hypnotic tension between movement and stillness, futurism and origins, freedom and form.

His sound lives in that understated power. A structured yet textured style that blurs the line between abstraction and realism. “I’ve always had a vision to make people dance,” he says — “to have them resonate with rhythms that unite a diversity of people.” His music, much like the city that is his home, thrives in contrast — deeply urban yet spiritually rooted, experimental yet intuitive.

Born and based in Amsterdam, Marrøn is not only a son of the city; he is one of its architects. As co-founder of the influential techno collective EERSTE COMMUNIE, he’s helped shape a loyal, love-fuelled community that values passion and mutual respect above all. This community is not merely an audience; it is a family, a home. Whether it’s a sweaty basement or a grand festival stage, his sets tap into the collective energy of the room, sparking an almost ritualistic connection that feels both ancient and futuristic.

And yet, for all the mystique surrounding his sound, Marrøn remains grounded. “Honestly, it’s really not intentional at all,” he says of the immersive atmosphere that often envelops his performances. “You would never hear me say my music is hypnotic or tribal or any of these so-called subgenres. Music is becoming our own interpretation and can create different feelings for everyone. I do hope it does become hypnotic for the people listening — where they lose track of time, close their eyes while dancing and feel a sense of not being watched. Total freedom. United with the music.”

Freedom, for Marrøn, is both artistic and cultural. His Surinamese heritage runs like a current beneath his creative choices. Though he avoids direct sampling, he draws inspiration from the fast polyrhythmic Apinti drum patterns of the Maroons — escaped enslaved Africans in Suriname who formed independent communities. His artist name itself is an homage to their resilience and spiritual endurance. It’s a subtle but potent way of keeping deep-rooted memory alive through the lens of modern techno.

Amsterdam, too, plays muse and challenge in equal measure. A city celebrating 750 years of reinvention, it has given Marrøn both the space to evolve and the pressure to innovate. “Amsterdam has allowed me to grow by doing my own thing, apart from what the hype was at that point. It was home — growing from the illegal raves until now in present times,” he recalls. “The challenge is definitely how to keep this Amsterdam crowd excited. How to stay refreshing but not lose your identity. I love to play here the most, but I also see it as the most challenging — which I like a lot.”

He understands Amsterdam as both nurturing and demanding. A city where experimentation is embraced, and where the demand for realness runs deep. To maintain relevance here requires more than momentum, and to do so while helping shape the city’s sonic culture is remarkable. Marrøn is a rare artist who manages both — young at heart and always curious, with a style that feels ever-evolving yet unmistakably his own.
