LABRINTH STARS ON THE COVER OF NUMÉRO NETHERLANDS’ FANTASY

interview by TIMOTEJ LETONJA and JANA LETONJA

LABRINTH is not just a hitmaker — he’s a sonic visionary redefining what modern music can feel like. From crafting era-defining singles in his native Hackney to winning Emmys for his emotionally immersive score on HBO’s EUPHORIA, his journey has been anything but conventional. Blending cinematic textures with soul, R&B, and electronic experimentation, LABRINTH has created a genre-defying signature that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide. Whether collaborating with global icons like Beyoncé, The Weeknd, and Sia, or taking center stage with his own emotionally charged live shows, he continues to push boundaries — not for the sake of reinvention, but in pursuit of something more honest, more human, and unmistakably his own.

BENEATH YOUR BEAUTIFUL became a defining moment for you. Can you tell us what that song still means to you today?

I wrote the song with Mike Posner. I remember I was writing all these weird songs, and he was like “You're doing all this fun stuff, but we're going to write you a pop song that's going to change your whole life”. We started writing and it literally was that kind of song in terms of connecting me to people that I never thought I would be. Still today, people come to me and they say that song really did something for them. For me, it just reminded me of the message in the song, of seeing beneath all the things that you pretend to be and finding the real person. And I think as an artist, you can become that person where you kind of have this mask on and you want to keep up appearances, but especially in the day and age of today, everybody wants to see the raw person behind all of the glitz and glamour. So, it's nice that the song is still relevant now.

With so many streams, awards, and major names behind you, what excites or challenges you creatively today?

Technical things in music. I still study music all the time. I study music theory and scales and just things that I haven't explored in music. And that world is endless. Trying to master music is like trying to master life, it's never going to happen. But that excites me. And then I guess, there's these ideas that I want to create. With my next album, I want to make an opera. And so that's what I'm on a mission to do.

You’re heading back on tour this fall. What can fans expect from the new show, sonically and visually, and what else is coming up next for you?

It's a tour that I wanted to do this year, but I've decided that I wanted to move it to next year because to put an opera out, takes a lot of work and getting all the pieces together is taking time. I would say this show is something that no one's seen before. That's definitely the focus. I feel very much like this show is definitely something new, and that's why I'm so excited and focused on it.
