CAROLINE BACHMANN’S TWENTY-SEASCAPE SERIES DEBUTS AT LE SIRENUSE, POSITANO
Le Sirenuse is pleased to announce the latest chapter in its acclaimed site-specific art program: Le Sirenuse I–XX, a cycle of twenty seascapes by Swiss painter Caroline Bachmann. Installed in the Don’t Worry Music Bar, the series charts an imagined day from midnight to midnight, inspired by the ever-changing view of the Li Galli islands as seen from the historic Positano hotel.
Bachmann, who lives on the shores of Lake Geneva, is known for her contemplative landscapes that capture natural beauty, memory and perception. The artist was invited to Positano in 2023 by Antonio Sersale and curator Silka Rittson Thomas. Captivated by the atmospheric shifts across the Mediterranean horizon, she chose Room 65, famed for its panoramic view, as her observation point. There, she created pencil studies that would later evolve into twenty circular oil paintings, each representing a moment in the day.
The tondo format paintings, rooted in Italian Renaissance tradition, are arranged in a clockwise sequence around the twenty niches of the Don’t Worry Music Bar, forming what Bachmann calls “an infinitely rotating clock.” At the center of the space hangs Martin Creed’s neon work Don’t Worry (2016), creating a resonant dialogue between past and present commissions.
Founded in 2015, the Artists at Le Sirenuse program now includes twelve commissions, among them Alex Israel’s staircase mural and Nicolas Party’s poolside fresco. Le Sirenuse I–XX deepens the hotel’s ongoing conversation between art and place, memory and imagination.
