ABOVE THE CITY AT TOREL PALACE LISBON

words by MAREK BARTEK

Perched on Sant’Ana Hill, Torel Palace Lisbon is set across a group of historic buildings overlooking the city and the Tagus River. Originally opened in 2013, the hotel began with the restoration of two private mansions dating from 1902 and 1904, later expanding to include additional spaces such as a modern apartment residence and the recently incorporated Lavra House.

Today, the property is composed of four distinct buildings, each contributing to a broader layout that combines historic architecture with more contemporary additions. Lavra House, classified as a National Monument, introduced new rooms, a garden and a second swimming pool, expanding the hotel’s footprint while maintaining its connection to Lisbon’s architectural heritage.

The hotel’s identity is shaped by a consistent reference to Portuguese monarchy, reflected across its interiors and room concepts. This theme runs throughout the property, influencing the atmosphere and decorative details without altering the original structure of the buildings. Accommodation is spread across the different wings, including rooms, suites, apartments and a private villa, with layouts varying according to each building.

Outdoor areas are a key part of the experience. Torel Palace Lisbon features two swimming pools: one positioned as a terrace with views over the city, and a second, more enclosed pool located within the garden of Lavra House. Together, they offer two distinct environments within the same property.

Food and drink are integrated across several spaces within the hotel. The Michelin-starred restaurant 2Monkeys operates as a fine dining concept centred around a U-shaped counter and a tasting menu, while Black Pavilion offers a more informal setting with à la carte options. Additional spaces, including a bar and private dining areas, extend the hotel’s culinary offering.

The Calla Wellness & Spa is located within one of the newer buildings and includes treatment rooms, a hammam, a fitness space and a small courtyard. Some of its treatments draw on cocoa-based rituals, referencing the history of the building where the spa is situated.

Rather than operating as a single, uniform space, Torel Palace Lisbon is defined by its composition. The different buildings, added over time, create a property that reflects both its origins and its gradual expansion, with each part contributing to the overall identity of the hotel.
