Audi has brought back the A2 name for a new compact electric car. Developed and built in Ingolstadt, Germany, the A2 e-tron is small enough for city driving but surprisingly roomy inside. Its sloping roof, smooth underside and specially designed wheels help it use less electricity, while the door handles sit flat against the body and open with a gentle pull.

Buyers can choose from four power levels and three battery sizes. The most economical version uses 12.8 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometres, making it the most efficient production car Audi has made. The longest-range model can cover up to 646 kilometres on one charge, while the largest battery takes 29 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

It can come in handy away from the road, too as the battery can charge an e-bike or power electrical equipment through a socket in the boot. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, it can also be connected to a suitable home system and used to store electricity.

Take a look inside, and there's a soft fabric-covered panel that runs across the dashboard and doors, making the cabin feel warmer, plus, an optional panoramic glass roof lets in plenty of light while helping to protect passengers from heat and UV rays. Two curved screens sit across the dashboard, and there is room to charge two phones wirelessly at the same time.

Clever magnetic fastenings keep cup holders, bags and charging cables in place. The cleverness doesn't stop there as the boot holds 396 litres, upping to 1336 litres with the rear seats folded, so there's plenty of room for luggage, shopping or a weekend away. Depending on the version, more than 300 parts use recycled steel, aluminium or plastic, with recycled polyester used for some of the interior fabrics.

The Audi A2 e-tron will be available to order from 10 September 2026, with deliveries beginning in December.
