The monster has risen once more! Under the new creative vision of director Guillermo del Toro, the adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel received an impressive 14-minute standing ovation during its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Jacob Elordi, who stars as The Creature, was moved to tears as the audience erupted in euphoria.
The film’s premise remains timeless as ever: a bright scientist, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, brings a monstrous being to life through macabre experiments, only to face dire consequences. His lover Elizabeth Lavenza, played by Mia Goth, is pulled into this gothic sci-fi tempest as well.
Critics are widely praising the film, with many applauding del Toro’s visual flair and style seamlessly combining with the essence of Shelley’s writing. Despite its imposing 149-minute runtime, the film leaves Venice as a bombastic, lush feast for the eyes. Elordi, virtually unrecognisable throughout, was spotlighted for his unexpected embodiment of The Creature. The actor previously revealed he spent nearly ten hours in the makeup chair to achieve the patchworked body look, which was designed with intricate details and levels of depth.
The film will debut worldwide on Netflix on November 7, following a limited theatrical run starting October 17.
