WE HOSTED AN INTIMATE DINNER AT ROSEWOOD TO CELEBRATE OUR LATEST CINEMA ISSUE

Oscar Wilde was clearly onto something when he famously wrote in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying: “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” It was eleven years after Eadweard Muybridge created the first moving picture, Sallie Gardner at a Gallop. And whether you agree or disagree with Mr Wilde, one thing is for sure — the world of cinema has become the clearest manifestation of life as art or art as life, whichever way you prefer. It has become an escape in which to dream, but also a space for realisation and coming to one’s senses, a mirror we hold up to ourselves.

Cinema is inherently a part of us. It is a treat for the eyes and music to our ears. And so, it should come as no surprise that we dedicated this whole issue to our fascination with cinema, celebrating the work of creatives across the film industry who have captured our hearts and souls.
On Tuesday, 21st July, we gathered at Rosewood Amsterdam to celebrate the launch of our latest Cinema issue. In a true theatrical turn of events, we left the club scene (just this once) behind and invited a small group of friends to dinner, allowing for stimulating conversations that, we hope, inspired future creative endeavours.

Among the guests were our cover star and director Karim Aïnouz; Olivia Lonsdale and Mees Peijnenburg, who are both featured in the issue; and our former cover stars Mel Van Roemburg and Josha Stradowski. Adding another touch of cinematic feel, several guests wore Cartier for the occasion.

After dinner, we moved to a small courtyard to witness a performance by the one and only Isabel van Gelder, whose music opened the door to a world full of emotions and stories of love, heartbreak, and the joy of experiencing them in a deeply human way.
Somewhere between the clinking of wine glasses, the chatter during smoke breaks outside, and Isabel's angelic voice, we all experienced life imitating art, if only for one evening, prompting the question: What's stopping us from living life like a movie? After all, one has always inspired the other.
