GENTLE MONSTER’S INTELLIGENT EYEWEAR GET A NEW LOOK
Following the launch of Gentle Monster’s recent intelligent eyewear collaboration with Google and Samsung, the brand has now come out with a new, bolder variation. A clean rectangular frame joins the now two-piece collection offering a more elegant, refined look. With a campaign featuring model it-girls Alex Consani and Anok Yai, the glasses are positioned as a fashion statement rather than a piece of technology, despite their range of AI features, including real-time translation, navigation, and recording.
Besides the design, the eyewear’s technology remains the same. With the incorporation of Google Gemini’s AI intelligence, the glasses are able to scan and give their wearer direct information on their surroundings through a small speaker hidden within the camera. Gemini also enables real-time translation and navigation assistance that relies on its live camera feed. Along with these AI features, the glasses also include discreet built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras. This allows its user to listen to music, take calls, record their surroundings, and take pictures while being completely hands-free – and completely inconspicuous.
Similar to Kylie Jenner’s Meta glasses stunt, it’s clear that intelligent eyewear wants to be appealing to a more trend-focused audience. But considering the amount of backlash the collaboration sparked, it’s difficult to imagine this campaign will bring forth a different reaction. The state of (over)surveillance is already under attack, so this concept truly feels unnecessary, and even harmful, to the average consumer. Although, Gentle Monster’s reputation is considerably better received compared to Zuckerberg’s Meta, so perhaps this project will land a bit better.
