IF YOU CAN'T DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR, LISTEN TO THE INNER VOICES: ZALANDO'S FW26 CAMPAIGN

words by DEBORAH DRENOFCI

The Inner Voices campaign, directed by two-time Grammy Award winner Melina Matsoukas, takes us on a fun, cinematic quest to answer the question "What Do I Wear?". It features brand ambassador Lily Collins, who roams around her closet trying to find the perfect outfit. Then there is the "style council," or better said, the "inner voices," portrayed by designer Bella Freud and fashion commentator Nicky Campbell.

Zalando makes use of the whole getting-ready process, but zooms in particularly on the most crucial moment: deciding what to wear. Bella Freud and Nicky Campbell observe Lily's choices from a visual "control room." Each of them takes a different, contrasting role in the jury. Bella Freud is calm, hopeful, and poised, while Nicky is bold, passionate, and a bit dramatic.

Zalando's campaign is not only aesthetically charming, but also a good reminder that good storytelling can revolve around even the most everyday decision-making processes. And the process of choosing your look for the day is, well, pretty important. As Lily Collins says: "We all ask ourselves 'What do I wear?' every single day, and I love that this campaign dives into the beautiful chaos of that decision-making process."

That chaos is exactly what drew Bella Freud to the project in the first place. For her, the question isn't really about fabric or fit, it's about identity, and the quiet panic that can creep in before you've even chosen a single piece.

When asked why she thinks "What do I wear?" is a question so many of us ask ourselves, her answer gets right to the heart of what Inner Voices is really about: "I think it's the wobble moment of self doubt: who am I? Who am I for this occasion? There can be such a crisis at that moment, and clothes can resolve it. Clothes are your ally."

And when asked what the best style advice she's ever received was, her answer was refreshingly simple:"'Don't hide' but maybe I gave that to myself. I have had an inclination to err on the side of not attracting attention but I don't want to be anonymous! So now I think, if in doubt, do it. Rather than don't do it. It is such a privilege to be able to dress up and wear great clothes so I'm doing it more and more."

It's a fitting note to end on: getting dressed was never just about what's hanging in the closet, it's about who you decide to be that day, and Zalando's latest campaign captures that beautifully.
