IN CONVERSATION WITH ARIANNA DAVIS

interview by JANA LETONJA

Bursting onto the scene with undeniable charisma and talent, Arianna Davis just had her breakout moment as she made her professional acting debut in NBC’s cheerleading comedy ‘Stumble’, which premiered this November. The role marks a refreshing and overdue moment of representation in the on-screen cheerleading world, blending humor with honesty and heart. A true triple threat—actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter—Arianna brings her vibrant energy and passion for storytelling to every performance.

‘Stumble’ marks your professional acting debut. How does it feel to be stepping into your first major role on such a big stage?

Making my acting debut on such a large scale feels like I’m living in a prayer I used to pray. I’m so incredibly grateful to have the chance to do what I love most.  Fortunately, I feel like a natural and that I clicked right into place for this project.

Tell us about your character Madonna. What drew you to her, and how do you connect with her story?

Madonna and I are so incredibly similar. We are both loyal, fiery, and resilient athletes who will work incredibly hard to be the best version of ourselves. I was drawn to how much of an overcomer Madonna is. She lives with narcolepsy and must navigate the challenges the condition has on her energy levels and productivity, yet she will always be the most energetic and hardest working person in the room. That’s grit.

What makes ‘Stumble’ stand out from other comedy series right now?

The element of cheer. We have this wholesome, funny, clever mocumentary, which is similar to other shows, but then bam, someone is flying in the air like gravity doesn’t exist.

Madonna is a curvy, Black cheerleader living with a chronic medical condition. How important was it for you to bring authentic representation to that role?

Properly representing who Madonna is has been the most challenging, yet rewarding part of becoming her. I know what it’s like to live in this world as a plus size black woman, and it is so vital to me to represent just how complex and multidimensional we can be. A true testament to Madonna’s power is her journey with narcolepsy. I’ve researched the different types and effects of narcolepsy, and I’m still learning new things about it. It is imperative to me that people see themselves through Madonna and feel empowered.

You started dancing at just two years old. How has your background in dance influenced your performance on ‘Stumble’?

My training in dance had a big impact on me booking this role in my opinion. I threw my leg up in a heel stretch in my audition and I think that’s what sealed the deal. Dance has a lot of similarities to cheer, and that helps me catch on pretty quick in our cheer rehearsals.

As a singer-songwriter as well, do you see yourself blending music and acting in future projects?

That is the ultimate goal. I believe music is another calling of mine and I’d love to incorporate it in projects moving forward.

Representation in the cheerleading and entertainment industries has been limited. How does it feel to be part of that shift?

I feel like I’m a part of something groundbreaking. I’m glad I get to break through barriers and I pray that I wear it with grace.

How do you take care of yourself mentally and physically while balancing such a demanding career?

I’m in a constant state of reverence and gratitude, which helps me feel grounded to my blessings. For the rest: family, friends, pets, skincare, hair care, rest, food, etc. That’s what keeps me well rounded.

Outside of acting, what creative outlets or passions do you turn to for inspiration?

I love to write music, sing, and dance.

What kind of roles or stories would you love to explore next as your career evolves?

I’d love to do a movie musical. If there was a ‘Greatest Showman 2’, I’d be down. I’d also like to attack a dramatic role eventually. I'm dramatic in life, so I should fit right in.

And finally, what does this moment mean to you personally, as you step into the spotlight with ‘Stumble’?

I can barely find words to express how much this means to me. Even just this time last year my life looked completely different. I have battled with some of life’s hardest obstacles and I’m coming out on the other side. This means everything to me and my family. I prayed for this. I worked hard for this. Now it’s happening.
