IN CONVERSATION WITH FRANKIE RODRIGUEZ

Frankie A. Rodriguez is one of the standout stars of Hulu’s hit comedy Chad Powers, where he plays Danny, Southern Georgia University’s theater-loving mascot and the mastermind behind Russ Holiday’s transformation into the mysterious Chad Powers. His scene-stealing performance in Season 1 earned praise from critics across TV Guide, The Hollywood Reporter, HuffPost, and Mashable. Audiences also know Frankie from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as well as roles in The Sex Lives of College Girls, Will & Grace, and Modern Family. With Chad Powers returning for Season 2 on 3rd September, we caught up with Frankie to talk about the show’s success, comedy, and what’s ahead.

Chad Powers became such a fan favorite after Season 1. What has the response from audiences been like for you personally?
It’s been great. I know it’s a crazy premise, Mrs. Doubtfire meets football, but to see the way people have really embraced the show has been amazing. 

Danny is such an original character. How would you describe him to someone who hasn’t seen the show?
Danny is the lead character, in his own mind. He doesn’t take no for an answer. He’s very driven, perhaps too driven. He knows what he wants, and will do whatever it takes to get it. Even if that means tanking an entire athletics department. But what I love about him the most is that he’s a great loyal friend. 

Your performance has been praised for both the physical comedy and the emotional moments. Which comes more naturally to you?
I love comedy. All types of it. And Chad Powers does it so well. But it also goes from 0-100 emotionally. And I love that. I can’t get enough. It’s been amazing to feel like I’m using every color crayon in the box.

Glen Powell is not only the star but also a co-creator. What was it like working with him on set
Glen is a genius. And the way he can elevate a scene with a question, or a suggestion, is incredible. I feel so lucky to get to watch him work up close because it really does feel like a master class in acting. And then on top of that, he’s just so dang wonderful to be around. Like, he might be AI. But 10 out of 10. No notes.

The show blends sports comedy with heartfelt friendships. Why do you think that combination resonates with audiences?
There’s something about being a part of a team and working together for a greater goal that everyone can relate to. And it’s always in those moments where you meet people that can change your life forever. Russ and Danny being an example. I don’t think those two would have ever met outside of the stadium. 

Without giving away spoilers, what can fans look forward to in Season 2?
A wild ride. You never know where the story is going to go and it keeps things so exciting. Let me just say this, I couldn’t breathe reading the last 3 episodes from this season. It gets so good.

You’ve worked on everything from sitcoms to musicals to comedy series. How has each project shaped you as an actor?
I leave every project having learned something new about myself. And that’s always a great feeling, to feel like you’re constantly evolving as an actor and as a person. With Chad Powers, I feel like I’ve grown so much as an actor, mostly from watching my co-stars work. I'm a huge fan of all of them so I’m soaking up how they work like a sponge. 

Many fans still know you from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. How has that experience influenced your career?
In so many ways, it's honestly hard to count. HSMTMTS was one of those jobs you could only dream about. I played that original soundtrack to the ground. Like seriously, the CD would not physically play anymore. And then to get the opportunity to be a part of the HSM legacy and make history as the first openly gay character in the franchise, that’s something I’m very proud of. Go Wildcats!

Looking beyond Chad Powers, what kinds of roles or genres are you hoping to explore next?
Living in New York, I’m always keeping an eye on what’s coming to Broadway. I’m always manifesting something musical. Musical movie perhaps? I just love singing so much. Consider this my campaign to get Wicked 3 off the ground starring myself and Grande. 

Outside of acting, what keeps you grounded, busy and creatively fulfilled?
I would say my family keeps me pretty grounded. I keep busy with reality TV. There’s so many Real Housewives to keep up with. And I try to be creatively fulfilled at least once a day. Sometimes that's learning a new song or writing. I’ve been writing a lot. Hopefully something I’ll be ready to share with the world soon.
