IN CONVERSATION WITH JUDITH FERNÁNDEZ
interview by JANA LETONJA
Judith Fernández is one of Spain’s most promising young talents with a unique cross-cultural background. 2025 is shaping up to be a breakout year for her. She’s currently filming L’as Hijas de la Criada’, Antena 3’s upcoming drama series, will be starring in Daniel Sánchez Arévalo’s highly anticipated film ‘Rondallas’, and appearing in ‘Entrepreneurs’, the buzzy new series from comedy duo Pantomima Full. With her rising profile and exciting projects on the horizon, Judith is stepping into a defining chapter in her career.
You have three major projects releasing in 2025. What does it feel like to be at such a pivotal point in your career?
I feel very lucky and excited because, as we all know, this is a difficult profession. I've been filming non stop for more than a year, going from one project to the next. And that is something that doesn't happen often. So, although it sounds cliche, I'm trying to live in the moment and be grateful for everything that's coming.

How do you choose roles that challenge and excite you?
I’m still young and starting my career, so I think absolutely everything challenges me at this moment. I feel motivated about absolutely any character's life, soul, story, and lucky for me, I still have so much time left to get into new adventures.

Can you share a bit about your character in ‘Las Hijas de la Criada’ and what drew you to the role?
Clara has been a great challenge because in the show, she starts with seventeen years old and at the end, she finishes with thirty two. She is a woman that grows up in a man's world and overcomes all sorts of problems. I mean, she faces the typical teenage problems and all the adult problems, which I haven't experienced yet, so being able to travel through a great part of her life has been very exciting. She has grown up in the XIX century so the possibility to imagine everything that happened in that era is amazing. For all those reasons, I was very happy to join this project. And last but not least, one of the writers of the show is a great friend, Tatiana Rodriguez. I thought it was going to be quite magical to give soul to the words and the life she had created.
What can audiences expect from ‘Rondallas’, and what role do you play in its story?
It has the perfect combination between drama and comedy, and people will laugh and cry. It's not the typical thing you say, it is the real deal. I always thought the film talks about the moment of overcoming a loss, so I think it will melt everybody's heart because we have all experienced some type of loss. And it has an ingredient that is the universal language for me, which is music and that gets anyone emotional.
I think that this is the best experience in my career so far, so we all say that if the audience perceives half of the love and the magic we experienced making it, we will have already succeeded. My character is a very young town girl that has lost her dad and that's trying to find her way in life, and in her love life too. She is very intelligent and has so much talent for music.

Daniel Sánchez Arévalo is such a celebrated filmmaker. What was it like collaborating with him?
It was absolutely incredible, I admire him with all my heart. He has this special thing you can't define with words. He just sees the world differently. At the beginning, I had to discover those eyes, what were they telling me, and all of a sudden it just clicked. Filming with him was very easy. We understood each other incredibly well. I have learnt so much from him and I feel so lucky that now I don't just have a director, but I have a friend for life.

‘Entrepreneurs’ has a very different tone from your other projects this year. How did you adapt to the comedic style of Pantomima Full?
I always thought that comedy is a very very complicated thing to do. And I also always thought I was not funny at all, so doing this show has made me discover a new part of me. I have found out I actually love acting in this genre and that I can at least try to be funny. I was very lucky because I was working with very talented people from the comedy world, Pantomima Full, the cast and the directors, Alex de la Iglesia and Rodrigo Ruiz. Being surrounded by a team that has a long career in comedy has helped me grow and learn a lot about this part of the industry.
How has your British-Spanish heritage influenced your perspective as an actress?
I think growing up in the UK and then coming to Spain made me feel that the world is not that big. It really helps me believe I’ll get to where I want to be. There are also these well known qualities of the English personality of being so perseverant, determined and very consistent person, that luckily I think I have inherited.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far in the industry?
Look after who you find going up the stairs, because you are going to find them going down the stairs.
Where do you see yourself five years from now in your career?
I would love to be working internationally, in the UK and Hollywood. Working in my language is a big dream that I’m sure will come true. But most importantly, I would love to be as lucky as this last year, happy and in peace doing what I love, which is acting in all its diverse forms.
What’s one thing about you your fans might be surprised to learn?
Well, I think being half British is something that people are usually surprised about. Not only because when I speak Spanish, I have a no accent, and vice versa when I speak English, but people also get surprised by the fact that I feel I belong to both places without a favorite. There are parts of me that are so British and parts that are so Spanish.
