IN CONVERSATION WITH TRE’ HORTON
interview by JANA LETONJA
Tre’ Horton is on the cusp of a major breakout. A true multi-hyphenate—actor, dancer, and singer—he steps into the global spotlight portraying Marlon Jackson in the highly anticipated biopic Michael, premiering on 24th April. The film charts the rise of one of music’s most iconic families, with Tre’ bringing a fresh perspective to the story through Marlon’s lens. With Michael poised to introduce a new generation to the legacy of Michael Jackson, Tre’ emerges as one of the most exciting new talents to watch.
Michael marks a huge moment in your career. What went through your mind when you first got the role?
I honestly couldn’t believe that they trust me enough to help bring this story to life. I grew up loving Michael, so I knew how much of a responsibility I had portraying Marlon.
What drew you to portraying Marlon Jackson specifically within the Jackson family story?
I definitely could relate to Marlon’s story. I believe Michael said in an interview that Marlon at first struggled learning dance moves. I was the same way as a kid. I could always dance, but I never picked up choreography extremely fast. With hard work and dedication, I got better. Marlon was the same way and became an excellent complementary dancer to Michael.
How did you begin preparing for such an iconic role?
I went down a rabbit hole of all things Marlon. Yes, I watched The Jacksons’ performances, but it was important to me that I got all of Marlon's nuances down. Even watching his solo performances helped me get into the role.
How did you approach capturing both the performance style and the personal side of Marlon?
I really locked in and studied everything that I could find. Rather, that was personal interviews, rehearsal footage, and live performances.
The Jackson 5 era is so beloved. Did you feel pressure stepping into that legacy?
Yes, I did feel the pressure. The fans are very much aware and only want the Jacksons to be represented in the best way. Their legacy is so important to me, and I hope that translates into my performance.
Your background is in dance and musical theater. How did that training help you on this project?
Having a background in dance and musical theater definitely helped with this project. We trained with dance legends Rich and Tone. They taught us like we were pro dancers, and thankfully, I’ve gone through similar training in the past.
You moved to Los Angeles recently. How has that transition impacted your career so far?
It was a great decision for me to move to L.A. Living in Los Angeles gives you the only choice to grind. I actually booked Michael within less than a year of living here.
Your journey happened quickly. How have you stayed grounded through it all?
I just continue to remain focused. I know there is always room to learn and grow. With that mindset, I will always remain grounded.
Do you feel this role has changed how you approach your craft moving forward?
Definitely. Preparing for a role like this wasn't an easy task at all. I challenged myself in ways that I’ve never done before.
What kind of roles or projects are you hoping to explore next?
I want to do a superhero project. Something with action, magic, and power. I’d love to do something involving stunts. That would be pretty cool.
What do you hope younger audiences take away from Michael and the Jackson family story?
To dream big. You can come from anything and succeed at anything you put your mind to. You must put in the hard work. Michael did not become the “King of Pop” overnight, so enjoy the journey. Make the best of it and don’t let anyone deter you from your dreams.
