IN CONVERSATION WITH HEYOON
interview by JANA LETONJA
Global pop artist HEYOON enters a bold new chapter with seriously unserious, her first EP since signing with Universal Music Korea. Known for her years with Now United, where she performed to sold-out arenas across more than 30 countries, she now embraces a freer, more instinctive creative identity. Built around the mantra “Leave Your Brain @ Home and Party,” the four-track project leans into high-energy club culture, led by the infectious single Swipe featuring Brazilian rising artist Lou Garcia. Balancing Seoul and Los Angeles, music and fashion, discipline and play, HEYOON’s solo evolution feels less like reinvention and more like release—an invitation to move, feel, and let go.
seriously unserious feels like a statement. What does that title mean to you personally?
It’s how I’m trying to live these days. Not taking life too seriously. Less in my head, more in my body.
The mantra “Leave Your Brain @ Home and Party” sets the tone of the EP. Was this a conscious shift away from overthinking?
100%. I can be such an overthinker. I personally needed this EP more than anyone. It's like a release for me.
How did you approach shaping the sonic identity of each track while keeping the project cohesive?
I actually had a song I built the album around. It didn't make it into the album since it’s an unreleased feature, but it gave me such a strong direction for the project. Mainly, the mindset of ‘no overthinking’ led me.
Brazil is one of your strongest fan bases. How important was it to create something that speaks directly to that audience?
Brazil fans have always been by my side, since day one. It's never even a question for me. I make music for my fans, and I can't wait to visit everywhere and party with them.
After your time with Now United, what has been the most liberating part of going solo?
The creative freedom, mostly. We all experience life differently, and I knew at some point I’d share my art that would connect with people. I believe the more personal you can get, the more you’ll be able to connect.
Did you feel pressure to redefine yourself, or did this evolution feel natural?
It felt natural. It's also only 1 year into my journey as a solo artist, and humans are complex. There are many sides of me, and I’m exploring them musically. I’m just enjoying the ride and evolving every day.
How has your creative process changed now that you’re leading your own artistic direction?
It changed in every way. Lots more decision-making for sure. It feels scary and freeing at the same time to make music that reflects my feelings, story and imagination.
You’re based between Seoul and Los Angeles. How do those two worlds influence your music and identity?
Seoul will always have my heart, and LA shaped my creativity and gave me new goals. I feel like I’m many different things, though. I was fortunate to travel the world, and all of those experiences shaped me.
Your presence at Paris Fashion Week has been widely noted. How does fashion play into your artistic expression?
Fashion and music go hand in hand. When music meets vision and visuals, it creates identity. I love playing around with fashion as a statement or expression.
What do you want people to feel the moment they press play on this EP?
Just fun. I want people to be able to let go of whatever’s in their minds.
This project feels like a new beginning. What is coming up after that for you?
More music. I’d love to start performing again asap. And travelling. I miss my fans all over the world.
