BEST DRESSED AT THE MET GALA 2025
words by RAZ MARTINEZ
The 2025 Met Gala dazzled with a bold and resonant theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a tribute to Black dandyism and its profound cultural legacy. Celebrities arrived not just dressed to impress but to pay homage—donning sharp tailoring, lush fabrics, and vibrant color stories that echoed a history of resistance and self-definition.
Black dandyism, a fashion and social movement where Black men and women adopt refined, expressive European styles, has long been a way to reclaim identity, subvert stereotypes, and assert presence in spaces that once excluded them. At this year’s Gala, the red carpet became a runway of cultural commentary, as artists like Colman Domingo and Janelle Monáe embodied the spirit of elegance with purpose.
More than a celebration of aesthetic, the Gala spotlighted the crucial role Black culture plays in shaping global fashion narratives. Black creatives have continually set trends, told stories through style, and used fashion as armor and art. By centering Black dandyism, the 2025 Met Gala challenged mainstream fashion to acknowledge its roots and gave overdue recognition to the power of dress as a tool of resilience and pride. In a world where image often speaks louder than words, this year’s Met Gala reminded us that how we dress can be a powerful declaration of where we come from—and where we’re going.
