A WEEKEND IN KING’S CROSS: THE STANDARD, LONDON AND MR AND MRS SMITH REIMAGINE THE CITY BREAK

King’s Cross is no longer somewhere travellers simply pass through. Over the past few years, this once-industrial corner of London has evolved into a destination in its own right, filled with contemporary art, independent design, ambitious restaurants and unexpected cultural spaces. Now, The Standard, London is inviting visitors to experience the neighbourhood as locals might, with a little help from Mr & Mrs Smith.

The hotel has partnered with the boutique-hotel travel club to create a curated neighbourhood guide as part of its new weekend experience. Rather than approaching London with a checklist of landmarks, the idea is to encourage guests to stay local, wander more slowly and discover what is happening within walking distance of the hotel. And there is plenty to discover.

A Different Side of London
Positioned directly opposite St Pancras station, The Standard occupies one of King’s Cross’s most recognisable buildings: the former Camden Town Hall Annex, a striking 1970s Brutalist structure that has been transformed into a 266-room hotel.

Its location makes it an unusually convenient starting point for exploring the area. Within the surrounding streets, visitors can move between culture, shopping, food and nightlife without spending much of the weekend travelling across the city.

King’s Cross itself has changed dramatically. The industrial character that once defined the district remains visible, but former railway and warehouse spaces now sit alongside galleries, restaurants, shops and creative businesses. Coal Drops Yard has become a focal point for shopping and design, while cultural destinations including Queer Britain and Lightroom add another dimension to the neighbourhood.

The nearby Brunswick Centre offers a dose of modernist architecture, while an expanding collection of restaurants, bars and wellness destinations means an entire weekend can comfortably unfold within this relatively compact part of London.

The Weekend, Already Curated
The collaboration with Mr & Mrs Smith takes some of the planning out of the city break. Guests booking The Standard’s dedicated weekend package receive a neighbourhood guide created with the travel specialist, highlighting places to eat, drink, explore and experience around King’s Cross.

The package also includes breakfast, a complimentary room upgrade when available and special offers with selected neighbourhood partners.

It is an appealing alternative to the traditional London itinerary. Instead of racing between famous sights at opposite ends of the Underground map, guests can spend the morning over coffee, explore an exhibition or independent shop in the afternoon and settle into dinner and cocktails without ever straying particularly far from their hotel.

Staying at The Standard
Of course, the hotel itself is part of the experience. The Standard, London was the brand’s first property outside the United States, bringing its characteristically playful approach to hospitality into a restored Brutalist landmark.

At street level, Double Standard combines the spirit of an American diner with elements of a British pub, while The Library Lounge offers a quieter setting surrounded by a curated collection of books.

Isla focuses on seasonal dining, and higher up the building, Decimo pairs live-fire cooking from Chef Paola Arenas with panoramic views across London. During the warmer months, the rooftop adds another reason to linger, with drinks, food and music above the city.

Rediscovering the Neighbourhood City Break
What makes the collaboration particularly timely is its emphasis on travelling within a neighbourhood rather than simply staying in one.

For repeat visitors to London, there is something refreshing about abandoning the pressure to cover the entire capital in a weekend. King’s Cross provides enough architecture, culture, food and nightlife to become the itinerary rather than merely the place where the hotel happens to be.

That philosophy sits naturally with both partners. The Standard has long positioned its hotels as social and cultural spaces as much as places to sleep, while Mr & Mrs Smith has built its reputation around independently selected boutique and luxury hotels. Its collection now encompasses more than 2.400 properties around the world.

Together, the two are making a case for a simpler kind of London weekend: choose a good neighbourhood, check into a hotel with personality and allow the city immediately outside the door to provide the rest.
