GUCCI PRESENTS THE 14TH ANNUAL LACMA ART+FILM GALA

words by PHOEBE GIBSON-DOUGALL

There’s no doubt about it: Gucci is having a moment. In September, Demna’s long-awaited debut for the house delivered a sexy new vision for the brand, and the accompanying campaign film—The Tigergave fashion fans plenty to obsess over. Part of what made this campaign so intriguing—besides the clothes—was its masterful convergence of fashion and film, a feat Gucci performed again last Saturday night when presenting the 14th Annual LACMA Art+Film Gala.

This year’s gala united notables from the art, film, fashion, and entertainment industries at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to honour artist Mary Corse and filmmaker Ryan Coogler. The evening’s Gala co-chairs LACMA trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio were also joined by Gucci Artistic Director Demna and Gucci President and CEO Francesca Bellettini.

Always the gracious hosts, LACMA and Gucci ensured their guests were well-fed, with dinner prepared by Chef David Shim of Simon Kim’s COTE New York, America’s first and only Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse. Meals were served on Ginori 1735 Oriente Italiano porcelain in Castagna (brown) and Meringa (beige), complementing the rich brown and deep purple tones woven throughout the space. Forgoing after-dinner mints, guests were instead treated to an intimate performance by Doja Cat once the plates were cleared.

As you’d expect, the gowns were gorgeous. Numerous guests were outfitted in custom Gucci, including the honourees Mary Corse and Ryan Coogler, alongside the likes of Doja Cat, Alex Consani, Elle Fanning, Demi Moore, and Paloma Elsesser. Kaia Gerber brought her supermodel mother Cindy Crawford as her date, and the duo were of course outfitted in their own custom Demna creations.

Angela Bassett presented the talented Coogler with his award, with the Sinners filmmaker thanking his mother, wife, brother, and mentors for his success, whilst also highlighting the importance of supporting small artists. Artist Mary Corse, a prominent figure in the Southern California art scene since the 1960s, received her award from artist James Turrell and graciously thanked the audience for their support.

The night was a creative’s dream, blending the best of art, film, and fashion. Fingers crossed our invite for next year doesn’t get lost in the mail!
