While last year’s Challengers spiked the number of tennis balls crossing the court, ping pong might soon become the new in vogue sport. A24 has just released the trailer for Josh Safdie’s highly anticipated film Marty Supreme, featuring none other than Timothée Chalamet. “A young man with a dream no one respects goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness,” the synopsis teases, perhaps reminiscent too of Chalamet’s unforgettable speech at the SAG Awards.

The sports film centres Chalamet as Marty Mauser, rumoured to be a fictionalised version of real-life ping pong pro Marty Reisman. Starring opposite him is Gwyneth Patrol, who plays a famous movie actor and with whom Mauser begins an affair with. The duo is supported by a broad range of cast members, including musician Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, Abel Ferrara, and Shark Tank entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary.
Having co-written with Ronald Bronstein, the film marks Safdie’s return to directing since his last brother-tag team feature Uncut Gems. Moreover, it is his first solo work since 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed. The film’s cinematography is being handed over to the legendary Darius Khondji, who previously collaborated with the brothers as well.
Slated for a Christmas release, with an extensive ensemble, Marty Supreme is a sure boost to the table sport’s reputation. In the meantime, A24 is set to premiere his brother’s Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson-powered The Smashing Machine at Venice Film Festival.
