LUCIENNE O’MARA OFFERS A DIFFERENT WAY OF SEEING

Art

words by PHOEBE GIBSON-DOUGALL

This October, Reflex Modern Art Gallery is proud to present The Space of Colour, the Dutch solo debut of London-based artist Lucienne O’Mara.

In O’Mara’s paintings, structure and emotion are in constant dialogue, offering viewers a different way of seeing. Her abstract visual language conveys both structure and disruption, and invites viewers to embrace the tension that endures between the two.

O’Mara’s work insists that when one allows their viewpoint to shift, contradictions can co-exist. In the art she creates distance becomes soft, time is layered, and fixed patterns give way to emotion and intuition. As the familiar slowly dissolves, space opens up for imagination and wonder.

For O’Mara, the ability to reframe one’s perspective is both an artistic touchstone and a necessity, as exemplified in her references to artists that inform her work:

“The American artist Agnes Martin (1912–2004) once showed a rose to her friend’s granddaughter and asked: ‘Is this rose beautiful?’ Then she hid the rose behind her back and asked again: ‘Is the rose still beautiful?’ You see—beauty exists in the mind, not in the rose.”

To coincide with the opening of O’Mara’s show at Reflex Amsterdam, the gallery’s imprint, Reflex Editions, will launch the artist’s first publication, an accompaniment to the exhibition. A champion of both emerging talent and established names, Reflex Amsterdam is proud to showcase O’Mara, whose powerful vision and work aligns seamlessly with the gallery’s international program.

Lucienne O’Mara’s The Space of Colour will run from October 3 to November 18, 2025 at Reflex Amsterdam.
