G-STAR REVIVES DECADES-LONG COLLABORATION WITH RENOWNED INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER MARC NEWSON

words by PHOEBE GIBSON-DOUGALL

They say you’re only as good as the company you keep, and in G-STAR’s case this advice couldn’t ring truer; the denim icons have revived their long-term collaboration with Marc Newson—one of the world’s most influential industrial designers. The collaboration sees G-STAR and Newson reintroduce a curated selection of his most iconic designs for the denim brand in a 22-piece capsule collection.

The partnership began in 2004 as a creative challenge to reinterpret G-STAR’s signature jean, and evolved into a groundbreaking collaboration that ran biannually until 2016. When first approached by G-STAR in 2004, the Australian designer had never worked in fashion, but Newson’s vast and longstanding interdisciplinary practice lent itself effortlessly to apparel design. He brought a fresh perspective to the venture, merging his futuristic aesthetic with the brand’s utilitarian DNA.

The admiration is mutual, of the partnership Newson says,

“Working with G-STAR has been one of the smoothest experiences in my career. They don’t chase trends: they approach fashion with a level of authenticity that’s truly rare. Their passion for art and design really sets them apart. Continuing the partnership has been a pleasure.”

The updated collection embodies the essence of timelessness, eschewing trends in favour of purposeful design. This commitment is reflected in the garments; each piece is created using advanced construction techniques, seamless finishes, and premium materials.

Newson’s background in industrial design serves as a focal point of inspiration, as does the style and tradition of Japanese workwear. The collection reflects the philosophy of enduring craftsmanship; form, function, and fashion merge into garments made to last.

"At G-STAR we believe in pushing the limits of denim, and Marc shares that same spirit of innovation. Since our first collaboration in 2004, when it was rare for industrial designers to step into fashion, we’ve challenged conventions together. With this re-edition, we bring back designs that were ahead of their time then, and remain just as relevant and timeless today," says Gwenda van Vliet, G-STAR’s Chief Brand Officer.

The accompanying campaign positions Newson and his design prowess centre stage, with the designer modelling his capsule collection in a series of understated yet refined images. In a nod to Newson’s industrial design heritage one of his signature pieces even makes an appearance—discerning fans will recognise a silver iteration of the Plastic Orgone Chair from 1998—recognition of his enduring legacy in the realms of both fashion and industrial design.
