HOTEL MOTTO: AU REVOIR, MAINSTREAM
Located in the heart of Vienna, Hotel MOTTO is an extraordinary lifestyle boutique hotel that blends 1920s Parisian flair with modern Viennese culture, Scandinavian comfort, and a touch of Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy. The property features 85 rooms, 6 suites, an event space, and a unique aesthetic framed by custom designs from architect Arkan Zeytinoglu alongside original vintage furniture, some sourced directly from the Hotel Ritz in Paris.
The historic building has hosted travelers since 1665, starting as The Golden Cross before transforming into the Hotel Kummer in 1872—a renowned social hub for prominent artists, writers, and musicians. Notably, the property was the birthplace of composer Josef Strauss in 1827. Architecturally, it retains its fully preserved Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic, and Byzantine facade elements, alongside its iconic oversized lobby columns.
Guest rooms boast luxury Italian linens, custom mini-bars, vintage Roberts radios, and local, organic skincare from Vienna's historic Saint Charles Pharmacy. The Chez Bernard Restaurant & Bar is set under a glass dome, and it serves organic Austrian-French-Mediterranean cuisine and overlooks a vibrant, Palm Springs-inspired rooftop terrace. The Motto Brot is an on-site organic bakery and patisserie that combines French flair with Viennese tradition. Custom staff uniforms are designed by Lena Hoschek, while the walls showcase contemporary art including graffiti mirror-art by SASA and photography by Victoria Barmak. A dedicated fitness and spa area feature a sauna, steam room, and a 1,000+ sq. ft. apartment-style event space.
The hotel is the vision of Bernd Schlacher, a celebrated Austrian restaurateur known for his global catering expertise and sustainable innovations, such as brewing "Brewdi" beer from surplus bakery bread. Operations, strategic growth, and the guest experience are directed by General Manager Daniela Kohoutek, an international hospitality veteran who took the helm in June 2026. Under her leadership, the property maintains its status as a Michelin-Key-awarded establishment that champions corporate social responsibility through a strict no-plastic policy, support for the LGBTQ+ community, and collaborations with local artisans.
