TIGMIZA: A HIDDEN OASIS IN MARRAKECH’S PALMERAIE

words by MAGDALENA ROE

Just beyond the bustle of Marrakech lies Tigmiza, a secluded retreat hidden among gardens and centuries-old palms in the Palmeraie. As a first introduction to Morocco, it felt like an unexpected one. Away from the city's intensity, life unfolds at a slower pace.

Yet despite its secluded feel, Marrakech is never far away. The city's Medina is just a 20-minute drive from the hotel. This balance between discovery and retreat is what I find makes Tigmiza such an appealing base: close enough to experience the best of Marrakech, yet far enough away to feel like a genuine escape.

Its name, meaning "House of Izza" in Berber, reflects the family story behind the property. Conceived over five years by a family of architects, artists, designers, and hoteliers, the hotel possesses a character that feels sophisticated yet deeply personal.

The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Kasbahs while incorporating influences gathered from across the world. Handcrafted zellige tiles, carved woodwork, marble floors, coloured tadelakt walls, and carefully sourced antiques create interiors rich in texture and detail. As I moved through the property, I found myself noticing something different in every room, whether a piece of furniture, an antique object, or the way light moved through the courtyards.

Spread across suites, private villas and an impressive Royal Villa, each room is designed around a distinct theme. Beyond the main Kasbah, bamboo-shaded pavilions create intimate hideaways, while private villas, hidden among landscaped pathways and lush gardens, evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Berber village.

My stay began with a visit to the Timijja Spa, and it could not have been a more fitting introduction to Tigmiza. Dedicated to traditional Moroccan wellness rituals, the spa combines authentic hammam experiences with restorative treatments in spaces that feel beautifully understated. Cool zellige tiles, peaceful courtyards, and softly lit treatment rooms create an atmosphere where time seems to slow naturally.

Beyond the spa, yoga and fitness spaces extend this sense of wellbeing. Whether beginning the morning with yoga or returning after a day in the Medina, the experience never feels prescriptive or overly curated. Instead, it reflects the effortless rhythm that defines the hotel itself.

Days unfolded around the swimming pool, in the gardens, or on the private terrace overlooking the Palmeraie. Before long, I found myself leaving the pace of Marrakech behind and settling into a slower life. The lush gardens become part of the experience. After spending the morning wandering through the Medina's souks, returning to this landscape felt almost ritualistic. The contrast between the city's energy and the stillness of the Palmeraie became one of the greatest pleasures of my stay.

Dining is equally considered. Across its restaurants, Moroccan culinary traditions meet seasonal ingredients and international influences, creating menus that feel rooted in tradition while remaining contemporary. Whether enjoying dinner beneath the stars or lunch on a shaded terrace, the setting is as memorable as the cuisine itself.

In a city celebrated for its colour and pulsating energy, Tigmiza reveals another side of Marrakech. One where architecture, craftsmanship, and romantic gardens take centre stage, and where every space invites you to linger just a little longer. What stayed with me most was not a particular suite or meal, but the feeling of discovering a quieter corner of Morocco, hidden among the palms.
