THANK YOU TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR FEEDING US THIS WEEK

words by ANOUK WOUDT

There must be something in the air… It feels like every musician and their mother has had a new song come out this week, but hey, we’re not complaining— we could never say no to new Björk. Though it’s not out yet, her announcement of a new album slated for 2027 has got music nerds everywhere spiralling. This, on top of Madonna’s Confessions on a Dancefloor II, which is coming out this July (Madonna summer, I’m so ready for you), our pop queens are keeping us fed, and for that, we are eternally grateful. But don’t worry, we’ve gone through everything and compiled a list of our favourite releases from the past week, across all genres, so take a listen and find your new favourite song—after all, with this much, there’s got to be something for everyone.

Besides these announcements, this week has been absolutely insane in terms of new releases. Olivia Rodrigo has just released the debut single for her upcoming and highly anticipated album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, following years of OR3 teasing. The song, titled drop dead, gives us a taste of what we can expect from her new sound— girly, synthy, and always lovelorn. On top of this, Rosalìa dropped the expanded version of LUX yesterday, which includes three new songs to obsess over. And now today, Lana del Rey released the theme song for the new 007 First Light video game, which has that classic Bond style that goes perfectly with her voice, and honestly, we can’t believe it didn’t happen sooner. Massive Attack has even just released a new song featuring the iconic Tom Waits, which is the first new music they’ve put out in years— marking the band’s official return to music through a symphony of ominous arhythmic sounds: very on-brand. The chilling 7-minute track reads as a protest to our times, with footage of major civil rights movements played in the accompanying video and a chant on the cycle of violence that perseveres through today’s conflicts in Iran and Palestine, among others.

We know you must already be overwhelmed with new things to listen to at this point, but it doesn’t stop there. Today’s drops were crazy. A new Tyla song featuring Zara Larsson? Oh, we’re sensing a Stateside type of cultural phenomenon brewing... Adéla and Slayyyter also dropped new songs today, especially for the party girls. Miley, Demi, Celine Dion… all the classic pop divas are coming out of hiding today. Even Anne Hathaway’s got music for us for her upcoming titular pop-star role in the upcoming psychological thriller, Mother Mary
